Distribute reports, billing basis or
to do-lists to users with limited insight

New collaboration features were introduced in vScope 3.1 that provided major improvements to the reporting functionality in vScope. In 3.2 we extend this functionality even further by introducing a new user group called viewer.

Viewer – Limited insight in vScope

vScope provides organizations with access to an almost endless IT library full of information. Sometimes you just want to share limited views of all this data to certain users, such as external parties or colleagues that don’t require full access to vScope. This is why we are introducing Viewer in vScope. Viewer can, as the name suggests, only view reports in vScope. No building, no filtering, no history just viewing. Here is a print screen that shows how P.Viewer sees vScope (notice that there are no tools available other than a very streamlined version of Table Explorer)

How to add viewer

Under the Settings page -> Users & Groups you will now find a permission group named “Viewer”. You can add a viewer manually by clicking “Add user” and selecting the Viewer radio button.

By integrating vScope with your directory service you will also be able to map the vScope permission groups to groups in your directory directory. This will automatically assign permissions at sign on.

Attach table exports to scheduled reports

Starting with vScope 3.2, you can now attach table exports to scheduled emails. This feature is a great time saver! It can help you automate your reporting, billing and follow ups. Supported formats are CSV and XLSX. You can access the scheduled export feature under the collaboration float in Table Explorer.

A new product – vScope Container

A container is a lightweight package that contains everything needed for an application to run. Since a container isolates the application from its surrounding it helps teams reduce conflicts in the infrastructure. From vScope 3.2, you can get all necessary information, configurations and settings about your Docker containers. This release introduces three new resource types:

Containers

A container is a lightweight, stand-alone, executable package of a piece of software that includes everything needed to run. In vScope you will get the necessary information you need about your containers such as:

  • When they were started
  • When they where finished

You will also be able to track any errors occurring such as if the containers were OOM killed.

Images

Images are essentially a snapshot of a container. Images are created with the build command, and they’ll produce a container when started with run. Adding information about images to vScope will give you information about:

  • How large are the images?
  • When were the images created?
  • What repository tags are used?

Volumes

Volumes are the preferred mechanism for persisting data generated by and used by Docker containers. With vScope you can for instance track down and see where all your persistent containers data is stored.

Engines

Docker Engine is a client-server application that is responsible for running the containers. In vScope you can build tables about for instance:

  • How many containers are running on the engines?
  • Which images relates to the different engines?
  • What server version is the engine using?

Veeam Backup ready for BETA

We are looking for testers for an upcoming vScope product called Backup. This backup inventory solution helps organizations identify failed jobs or replicas. Anyone running vScope in full or trial mode is free to evaluate and feedback Veeam backup.

We are phasing out Guest Access

Say hi to the new Viewer group and (start to) say goodbye to Guest Access in vScope. Previously, administrators have been able to grant access with no required authorization, so called guest access. The introduction of the new group Viewer will be the first step towards phasing out Guest Access from vScope, making it more compliant with best practices regarding access control and management. Important: Once you choose to disable Guest Access on your vScope installation you will not be able to re-enable it again.

Updating History Browsing – Introducing History&Compare

Updating the UI of one of vScope’s most powerful features allow you to easier get started comparing and investigating historical data. Here are some of the highlights:

Sliding dates

Use the “Sliding date span” feature to save a table to always compare the latest version with x number of days ago. Perfect for follow up reports or monthly billing basis!

Custom dates

“Custom dates” comparison lets you decide two dates to compare. Very good to track back what happened during a vacation or a project.

Fixed date

Instead of comparing two dates, overview what your IT looked like at a specific date. In the following screenshot we can have a look at what our server configurations looked like 2017-12-11. Notice that the “Compare” box is unchecked.
